Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
