EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
