In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
