Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
